Per-drop pricing is one of those numbers where the market average tells you almost nothing about what your number should be on this job. I've seen the same 40-drop office fit-out priced at $160 a drop by one shop and $290 by another, and both contractors made money. The difference wasn't greed. It was scope.

So let's break down where the real number comes from, because "what does everyone else charge" is the wrong starting question. The right one is: what does it cost you to put a tested, labeled, documented drop in this specific building, and what margin do you need on top of it?

Start with the market range, then adjust hard

Here's where the market sits right now. Standard Cat6 in a typical office environment runs $150 to $250 per drop across most of the country. Cat6A, plenum-rated cable, after-hours work, or jobs requiring full certification push that to $200 to $350 and up. In high-cost metros it climbs further — some NYC shops publish $175 per Cat6 drop as their starting rate, and that's for clean, accessible work. A blended national average including cable, termination, and labor lands around $125 to $300 per drop depending on run complexity, wall construction, and local labor rates.

Now, the single biggest thing that moves your number inside that range isn't the cable spec. It's volume. Mobilization, design time, and your minimum-day labor cost get spread across however many drops the job has. A 10-drop retrofit might genuinely need to be priced at $350 to $400 a drop just for you to break even on the truck roll, the walkthrough, and the half-day of setup before anyone pulls a foot of cable. Put that same crew on a 500-drop new-construction building and $175 a drop can be comfortable, because your fixed costs are diluted 50 times over.

That's why publishing one flat per-drop rate is a trap. If a GC calls asking "what's your drop price," the answer should always come with tiers. Something like: 1–10 drops at one rate, 11–50 at another, 50-plus quoted per project. You don't have to share the whole ladder with the customer, but you'd better have it in your head before you answer the phone.

Materials, for what it's worth, are the small end of this. Cat6 cable runs $0.15 to $0.25 a foot, so even a generous 200-foot average run is $30 to $50 in cable, plus a jack, a faceplate, a patch panel port, and a couple of patch cords. Call it $55 to $75 in materials per drop for decent-quality gear. Labor is 60 to 70% of the real cost on almost every cabling job, which means your per-drop price lives or dies on how fast your crew actually moves in that building — not on what you paid for the box of cable.

Do the labor math before you quote

Here's the calculation that separates profitable shops from busy ones. In a newer building with drop ceilings, accessible tray, and clean pathways, a two-person crew can realistically pull, terminate, and test 30 to 50 drops a day. Take the middle of that — say 16 to 20 hours of combined labor for 40 drops — and you're looking at roughly 0.4 to 0.5 labor hours per drop under good conditions.

Now run the same crew through a 1960s building with hard-lid ceilings, plaster walls, and no existing pathway. That production rate gets cut in half, sometimes worse. Industry estimating guides put moderate-difficulty installs at 2 to 6 labor hours per point once you factor in fishing walls, cutting and patching, firestopping penetrations, and working around an occupied office. Labor time jumps 40 to 75% the moment you're in hard-ceiling environments. Same drop count, same materials — but your labor cost per drop just tripled.

So the working math looks like this. Say your fully loaded labor cost is $55 an hour per tech (and if you don't know that number, stop bidding until you do — wages, payroll taxes, insurance, vehicle, benefits, all of it). At 0.5 hours per drop, that's $27.50 in labor. Add $65 in materials, some allocation for consumables, testing time, and supervision, and your hard cost sits around $110 to $120. Price at $175 and you've got a real margin. But at 3 hours per drop in a difficult building, your labor alone is $165 — and that $175 quote just bought you a losing job. Same "drop," wildly different cost.

Two other line items deserve their own money. First, certification: if the customer wants every link tested to TIA standards with a delivered Fluke report, that's worth $25 to $50 per drop on top of your base — the tester time, the tech time, and the documentation are real costs, and enterprise and healthcare clients will pay for it because their IT departments require it. Second, after-hours work: nights and weekends should carry a 25 to 50% premium on the labor portion, minimum. Occupied-space retrofits where you're coordinating with facilities, badging in, and protecting furniture aren't the same job as an empty shell, and your price should say so.

The mistake that quietly kills margins

Here's the one I see over and over, and it's the reason so many shops win bids and still lose money: quoting a lean per-drop number that silently excludes half of what the job actually requires, then eating the difference.

It goes like this. A contractor wants to hit a competitive number, so he quotes $145 a drop "all in." What's not in that number? Plenum-rated cable — which the building's air-handling ceiling legally requires and which costs meaningfully more than riser. Firestopping at every rated-wall penetration. The J-hooks and pathway hardware for the 80-foot ceiling run between the closet and the far wing. Labeling and as-built documentation the IT manager expects. Testing beyond "the link light came on." After-hours access because the office is occupied 8 to 5. Every one of those was foreseeable at the walkthrough, none of them made it into the price, and now the contractor's choice is to eat the cost or fight a change-order battle that torches the relationship.

The fix isn't padding — it's scoping. Write the quote so the per-drop price explicitly states what it includes: cable type and rating, average run length assumption, termination both ends, patch panel port, testing method, labeling standard, and working hours. Then list what triggers additional charges: runs over your stated average, hard-ceiling areas, core drilling, firestopping, lift work, after-hours access. A customer comparing your $195 scoped drop against a competitor's vague $150 drop can now see the $150 is going to grow. And when it does grow — because it always does — you're the contractor who told the truth up front.

One more thing on that walkthrough: never quote per-drop pricing on a commercial job you haven't walked. The difference between "drop ceiling with tray" and "hard lid with no pathway" is invisible on a floor plan, and it's a 2x to 3x swing in your labor cost. Fifteen minutes above the ceiling tiles is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.

Where does that leave you on an actual number? For a typical accessible commercial Cat6 job at reasonable volume, most healthy shops in average-cost markets should be landing between $165 and $225 per drop with certification priced separately. Small jobs under 10 drops need either a per-drop number north of $300 or a minimum project charge — pick whichever your market tolerates better. Cat6A adds 20 to 30%. Hard-ceiling retrofit work should never be priced off your standard rate; build it from labor hours instead.

And if you're consistently winning more than 60 or 70% of your bids at your current per-drop rate, you're not competitive — you're cheap. Raise the number $15 and see what happens. Most contractors who do find out the market was never the thing holding their price down. They were.
